MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT ENTRANT – Dr Charles J. Farrugia
Depuis le début de cette année, j’ai l’honneur d’assumer la responsabilité de Président de la Branche européenne du Conseil International des Archives (EURBICA). Avec plus de 900 membres, EURBICA est l’une des entités les plus larges du Conseil International des Archives (ICA). En plus, EURBICA est le principal organisme professionnel paneuropéen qui couvre le secteur archivistique dans et hors de l’Union européenne. L’organisation a été relancée en 2016, après une vaste enquête auprès de ses membres. Sous la Présidence de Deborah Jenkins, au cours des deux dernières années l’organisation a connu une période de revitalisation.
En regardant ces deux années, nous estimons que nous avons réussi à atteindre nos objectifs, à savoir fournir un large soutien à plusieurs
archivistes et communautés européennes, sans réinventer la roue. Conscients des ressources administratives limitées dont dispose la Branche, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la construction de ponts avec d’autres structures pour économiser les ressources et éviter la duplication. La Branche a maintenant le statut d’observateur dans le Groupe européen d’archives. La Branche a aussi un accès facilité au Comité européen des archivistes nationaux (EBNA), grâce aux membres de son Comité Exécutif. Nous avons également mis en place une collaboration avec ICARUS visant principalement la fourniture de contenu pour le Blog européen d’archives. La participation à plusieurs conférences européennes nous a aussi permis d’établir de nouveaux réseaux à la fois sur le plan personnel et institutionnel.
Au cours des deux prochaines années nous comptons poursuivre nos efforts conformément à notre stratégie et à notre plan d’affaires. Cependant, cela ne peut réussir qu’avec l’engagement actif de nos membres. Je lance donc un appel en faveur d’une plus grande participation des archivistes de toute l’Europe. En nous faisant parvenir des informations sur les événements, les projets et les défis de votre secteur d’activité, vous nous donnerez déjà un soutien précieux. Nous utiliserons nos plates-formes de médias sociaux (par. ex. Facebook) pour diffuser ces informations et également pour stimuler le débat si nécessaire.
Tout en remerciant Deborah et mes collègues de l’Exécutif, je suis impatient de poursuivre la mise en réseau et les activités dans l’intérêt de la communauté des archives.

MESSAGE FROM INCOMING CHAIRPERSON – Dr Charles J. Farrugia
As from the beginning of this year I am honoured to shoulder the responsibility as Chairperson of the European Branch of the International Council on Archives (EURBICA). With over 900 members, EURBICA is one of the largest entities within the International Council on Archives (ICA). Apart from this, EURBICA is the main pan-European professional body which covers archival activity in and outside the European Union. The organisation was re-launched in 2016, following an extensive survey of its members. Under the Chairmanship of Dr Deborah Jenkins during the last two years the organisation witnessed a period of reinvigoration.
Looking back at these two years, we feel that we managed to reach our aims of providing a wide sweep of support to several European archivists and communities without re-inventing the wheel. Aware of the limited administrative resources the Branch has, we focused on bridge building with other structures to economise on resources and avoid duplication. The branch now has observer status on the European Archives Group. The branch also has ready access to the European Board of National Archivists (EBNA) through members of its Executive Committee. We also built collaboration with ICARUS mainly focused on the provision of content for the European Archival Blog. Participation in a number of European conference also made it possible for us to build new networks both on the personal and institutional levels.
During the coming two years, we plan to continue with our efforts in line with our strategy and business plan. However, this can only succeed through active engagement from our members. Thus, I do appeal for greater participation from archivists all over Europe. Sending us information about events, projects and challenges in your area of operation is already valuable support. We will use our social media platforms to disseminate such information and also stimulate debate where needed.
While thanking Deborah and my colleagues on the Executive, I look forward to further networking and activity in the interest of the archives community.
